DIVING BECOMES MISSION-CRITICAL

World War II introduced new forms of bomb disposal, mine clearance, and underwater demolition. Accurate timekeeping became essential for bottom time, decompression, and coordinated operations where mistakes carried immediate consequences.

THE NEED FOR A TRUE DIVE WATCH

As diving proliferated, existing military watches proved insufficient underwater. European navies began working with manufacturers to develop purpose-built dive watches, establishing functional foundations that still define dive instruments today.

The U.S. Navy faced a different reality. American-issued watches were reliable on land and in the air, but inadequate underwater. Despite the availability of capable foreign designs, procurement restrictions limited adoption. A clear operational need existed, but no American made solution yet met it.

BULOVA AND THE POSTWAR NAVY

During World War II and the postwar years, Bulova supplied the U.S. military with precision timekeeping equipment at scale. That relationship continued as the Navy relied on domestic industry to address emerging operational needs.

By the mid 1950s, Bulova stood at the intersection of military experience, industrial capacity, and technical research, positioning the company to respond when the Navy formalized its requirements for a submersible wristwatch.

MIL-SHIPS-W-2181 IS ISSUED

On December 5, 1955, the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships issued the MIL-SHIPS-W-2181 specification, calling for the first American-made, non-magnetic, submersible wristwatch designed specifically for combat divers and early EOD teams.

The watch was to withstand significant pressure, resist moisture intrusion, remain legible in low light conditions, and incorporate a rotating elapsed time bezel to track bottom time. These requirements marked the Navy’s first deliberate attempt to define a purpose-built dive instrument to U.S. operational standards.

BULOVA SUBMITS FIRST PROTOTYPES

Bulova, drawing on its long history of military production, delivered its first MIL-SHIPS prototypes to the Navy Experimental Diving Unit for evaluation.

REFINEMENT AND FIELD EVALUATION

Updated Bulova prototypes showed marked improvement and were evaluated by the Navy Experimental Diving Unit across multiple test cycles. Feedback focused on visibility, moisture control, and strap design, with the Navy encouraging continued development.

THE PROGRAM ENDS QUIETLY

Despite progress, Bulova ceased further submissions and withdrew from the program. The Navy never formally adopted the watch, and only a small number of prototypes were produced. Fewer than a dozen are estimated to exist today, making them incredibly rare.

AN UNFINISHED CHAPTER

Even after the program ended, the Navy continued to reference the Bulova submersible watch in official publications, signaling how close it came to adoption despite never being issued.

THE MIL-SHIPS DESIGN RETURNS

Bulova revisited the original program with a modern MIL-SHIPS-inspired watch, reintroducing key design elements developed for the Navy more than six decades earlier.

CARRYING THE PURPOSE FORWARD

The MIL-SHIPS Navy EOD builds on that legacy with a configuration developed specifically for the EOD community. It reflects the same operational intent that shaped the original program, connecting past, present, and mission through a shared tool.
